Dear Mendon Resident:
I am seeking reelection to the Mendon the Town Board position in November 2005. Since January 1, 2002, I have been a Town Councilman and for the past two years Deputy Town Supervisor. As a town official, I have been actively involved with community development, fiscal issues related to the budget, taxes, expenditures and promoting Mendon residents’ ideas for town improvements including:
- Mendon Hamlet as a community focal point
- Support of the Hamlet Master Plan as a center for businesses, residential neighborhoods and community services
- Maintain Mendon’s rural characteristics
- Promote the economical viability of agriculture.
- Protect environmentally sensitive open space and scenic resources
- My business knowledge has benefited the Town of Mendon in several of its decisions. For example:
- Evaluation of the town wide insurance program resulting in a better understanding of indemnity risk plans such as self insurance and individual accident loss limits.
- Working with the independent town auditors to create a more detailed audit management letter. The letter allows the town to have a better understanding of weaknesses in our financial systems and to improve town practices.
- Questioning the construction costs (library and community center improvements) and professional fees quoted for projects. Additionally, requesting/requiring more reasonable expenditures based upon my prior business experiences in construction.
- Challenging costly budget suggestions where the expense has no pay back to the town. An example would be in the sale/leaseback proposal by a developer of a new library.
My wife Arlene and I have been Mendon residents for 24 years and have both participated on various town boards and committees. For the past two years Arlene has been and is currently the Mendon Arts Festival Chairman. This festival promotes the Hamlet and Town of Mendon. This expertise along with my current experience on the town board will be beneficial in serving the residents of Mendon as a reelected Town Board member.
In the business community before retirement, I was a professional financial manager with extensive experience in risk management, insurance, safety leadership, accounting/ auditing and other senior management projects. My accomplishments have included success in streamlining costs; reengineering systems; improving processes and developing partnerships with outside parties.
My education experience is Bachelor of Science in Commerce, Rider University and New York State Certified Public Accountant. Additionally I have been a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Society of CPAs.
I would appreciate if you would vote for me as the Town Board candidate in the 2005 election.
Sincerely,
Roy A. Cluff
