Dear Mendon Resident;
I am pleased to inform you of collaborative
effort being conducted by the New
York State Department of Transportation and the Town of Mendon. As you may be
aware, during the past couple of years the Town has been engaged in a number
of efforts to attempt to mitigate the significant impact the deer population
has had on people & property
The Town constituted a Deer Management
Committee that has, in cooperation
with the Mendon Highway Department
and the Monroe County
Sherriff’s Department,
collected and analyzed data regarding deer-motor vehicle accidents throughout
the Town. At the same time we have investigated intervention strategies utilized
in other areas of the country that were reported to have a positive impact.
One
of those strategies is the installation of “Deer
Warning Reflectors”.
We met last spring with representatives from NYS Department of Transportation
and the result is a pilot project that will be conducted on Clover St. adjacent
to Mendon Ponds Park south to the intersection of Mendon Center Road and Clover
Street.
We will compare data over the next couple of years with the existing data
from the previous three years of reported deer-motor vehicle accidents.
The
enclosed “Fact
Sheet” provides the time table and a description
of the technology that will be utilized.
State DOT crews will begin the project next week with an early November
date anticipated as completion of the project.
