Library Survey a Go!

On Monday, March 27, at the regularly scheduled Town Board Meeting, a workshop was held to review the proposed library survey.

Mendon Public Library Board of Trustees President, Shari Stottler chaired the workshop with assistance from Dave Middleton, a member of the Library Exploration Team.  The printed survey is planned to be distributed to every registered voter.  In addition, an on-line survey will be available for those who wish to expand on their answers.  Printed copies of the on-line survey will also be available at the library.  Draft copies of both the mailer survey and on-line survey were provided to the Town Board members prior to the meeting.

The goals of the survey were reviewed with the Town Board. The goals are to answer the following questions:

1.Do you think we need a new library?
2.How big should a new library be?
3.Do you support any of the 3 viable sites (W. Main Street, Monroe Street, and Semmel Road)?
4.Would you prefer us to keep looking for an alternative building site?
5.Are we communicating well?

All sections of the survey were reviewed with the Town Board and the Board members offered comments.  Mrs. Freeman suggested that the survey include questions regarding library usage by school age children.  Mr. Cluff wished to add a question about whether residents are using libraries other than the Mendon Public Library.  Mr. Cluff also raised a concern that the cost of the Monroe Street site does not include the additional cost for purchasing property to provide Main Street access.   Mr. Rooney commented that the development costs mentioned in the survey for the three sites would be lower if a smaller (less than the 12,500 sq. ft. originally proposed) facility was planned for the sites.

Mrs. Stottler mentioned that the site development costs are only for comparison to each other to give residents an idea about the different costs associated with each site.   There were additional comments about some of the wording of the questions.

At the end of the workshop, the Town Board voted unanimouslyto provide up to $2000 for postage to distribute the survey.  The survey will be mailed to every registered voter in April.
